This virtual symposium will gather colleagues, representatives of schools, for six sessions (November to June), while, at the same time, those representatives also meet regularly with colleagues at their respective schools. The meetings with colleagues at each school will be to metabolize, disseminate, and design based upon the discussions with Harris and Harvey. In so doing, the gathered conversations with Harris and Harvey will seed and inspire embedded projects in multiple locations about the nature and workings of race, racism, and white supremacy. The two layers of discussions along with the embedded project will be catalysts for institutional change toward health and wholeness of many campus climates and institutional ecologies.
Body indicators such as nose, hair, and flesh tones are relied upon for the perpetuation of prejudice, bias, and presumed privilege. What would it mean to unlearn, then relearn more liberative ways of reading the body? Can the truncated imagination which only sees value in the white body be rekindled to see worth in all bodies? Dr. Nancy Lynne Westfields hosts Dr. Melanie Harris (Texas Christian University) and Dr. Jennifer Harvey (Drake University).
In keeping with the Wabash Center’s emphasis upon community building, it is important that all participants fully participate in every cohort session from beginning to end, and make the time and emotional commitment to engage in the life of the group. Late arrivals and early departures, as well as the presence of friends or accompanying family, distract participants’ focus thereby detracting from the cohort experience. Out of respect for one another, and regard for our shared work, we ask for full participation by all members of any cohort. Please note that our facilities on the Wabash College campus impose certain limitations. For example, we are unable to provide lodging for a child (of any age) or arrange for childcare. We cannot provide equipment for the care of children. We are unable to provide lodging or meals for non-participants. We cannot accommodate pets. Should the group gather in an off-campus venue, and family members or friends accompany the participant, lodging, meals, or social activities will not be arranged or provided for those accompanying the participant. Every effort will be made to ensure that participants’ experience will be enriching, engaging and unencumbered. If conflicting plans, family obligations, or unforeseen events inhibit your full participation, you may need to withdraw from the cohort. It is expected that if you agree to participate in a Wabash gathering that you will abide by this statement. Should extenuating circumstances arise, please immediately contact Nancy Lynne Westfield, Director of the Wabash Center.
