Teaching the Hebrew Bible after October 7
Proposal abstract :
In the wake of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and the ensuing responses, our pedagogical approaches to teaching biblical texts are more critical than ever. This grant aims to nurture conversations between four biblical studies professors, each of whom regularly teach large Hebrew Bible introductory courses in seminary (Nam, Cleath) and undergraduate (Mandell, Smoak) contexts. Our overarching question is as follows: “How do the events of October 7 and the escalating violence compel us to innovate new approaches to teaching Hebrew Bible introductory classes?”
Learning Abstract :
Project Goals:
We hope to achieve the following goals:
• stimulate new and innovative ways of teaching the biblical texts in a way that can engage the ongoing Middle East conflict.
• foster an appreciation for biblical texts as interlocuters in understanding the complexities of these present violences, with particular sensitivity against anti-Semitic or supersessionalist tendencies.
• bring sophistication to the political rhetoric on our very campuses that are too binary and charged for an exceedingly complex situation.
