Teaching the Bible Through These Times
Proposal abstract :
Knowing that having effective teachers of the Bible is key to SBL’s mission to promote academic studies of the Bible, plus the evidence that our members have an immense desire and need to keep on improving their teaching skills, we propose a three-year partnership with the Wabash Center so we can run seven teaching workshops for SBL members between 2025 and 2028: one of these workshops will be in-person, four will be hybrid, and two will be on solely online. These workshops will focus on teaching the Bible in ways that attend to the emerging issues of our society and world.
Learning Abstract :
Our proposal has three goals. Its main goal is to help our members to become more effective
teachers by becoming more reflective about their respective teaching philosophies and practices,
especially how they can become more intentional in transforming and tailoring their teaching of
the Bible to address the needs of our current times. A secondary goal of these workshops is to
foster relationships among our 7,000 plus members. Finally, we aim to continue to strengthen
our relationship with the Wabash Center, so we can work together to promote teaching and
learning in the study of religion and theology.
