Wartburg Theological Seminary and Luther Seminary
2025

Proposal abstract :
In 2030, the global Lutheran communion will celebrate the 500th anniversary of its two uniting confessional documents: the Augsburg Confession (1530) and the Small Catechism (1529). These documents have been the primary teaching documents of the Lutheran tradition, as is indicated by the opening words of the Augsburg Confession: “Our churches teach. .. .” The faculties of Luther Seminary and Wartburg Theological Seminary see this as a critical opportunity to reflect together as institutions of teaching and learning. We propose to collaboratively reimagine the outline, content and pedagogical commitments of key courses in our respective seminary curricula to highlight the relevance of these confessional documents for the formation of congregational leaders in this current moment in the life of the church. Additionally, we plan to collaborate and network together as two faculties along with global partner Lutheran institutions to expand the relevance of these pedagogies, learning from and with each other.

Learning Abstract :
This grant will comprise work inclusive of two retreats, the first one in June 2025, and the second one in June 2026, with the bulk of the activity carried out in between those two retreats. There is currently a small work group of faculty framing the activities for the first retreat. The retreats will take place over several days in LaCrosse, Wisconsin at a Franciscan retreat center.
