Proposal abstract :
This Civil Rights Pilgrimage as a Vessel for Teaching through Trauma initiative aims to strengthen teaching practices that support and uplift minoritized and marginalized faculty and students. It fosters opportunities for faculty dialogue, interpersonal exchanges, and meaningful connections, particularly for a geographically distributed faculty. Recognizing the profound impact of racial trauma, the initiative acknowledges its effects on cognitive processes, emotional regulation, and coping mechanisms, which can hinder effective responses to stress. The pilgrimage is designed to help us examine the ways trauma shows up in the classroom, our career, and in society. Pilgrimage speaks of a journey, a process to arrive at a place and a shared experience. The pilgrimage will help us reflect on balancing our values as professors and speak to the evolving needs of a community-oriented pedagogy in the digital age.

Central to this effort is an experiential pilgrimage centered on the Civil Rights Movement,
offering a spiritual, educational, and cultural exploration. Through this journey, faculty
participants will engage in intentional discussions on trauma, its manifestations in the classroom,
and the development of trauma-informed pedagogical approaches.
